Strategic Planning & Business Planning

We live in an increasingly complex social sector environment.  To survive, nonprofits organizations, government agencies, and philanthropists must be increasingly focused on a disciplined program strategy, an adaptive revenue and resource development model, and clear and consistent performance measurement & improvement.  Strategic planning is at the core of all three of these elements of success.

Our approach to strategy planning is participatory, aspirational and focused on the unique needs of your organization.  We are committed to providing customized and tailored solutions based first and foremost on your past experience, strengths and expertise.  We supplement your organizational core by weaving in leading-edge thinking, best practices, and emerging trends in the formal and informal literature. In addition to more traditional models of strategic and business planning, I utilize a variety of models for Social Impact, Social Enterprise, and Venture Philanthropy to help organizations think about strategic growth.

The typical strategic planning process includes:

  • Assessing your organization’s “social ecology.” Thinking about what internal and external issues that shape your organization’s current reality and how that ecology may be changing.
  • Building and energize a strong Social Impact Model based on clearly identified needs, mission, vision, program strategies, operating capacity, funding models, and outcomes and evaluation measures.
  • Develop key strategies based on your organization’s strengths, aspirations, opportunities and envisioned results.
  • As needed, establish ad hoc working committees develop detailed action plans for implementing the key program, capacity, and revenue development strategies.
  • Create a written strategic planning document and dissemination plan to effectively engage your staff, board members, community and investors in supporting the success of the plan.
